My late elder brother when he was alive as president,
The National Academy of Science, The Rpublic of Korea
I recall my elder brother
Soo Yong Kim
I made an international call to my brother in Korea to express my gratitude for sending me Christmas card via FedEx. He told me that It would take almost one month to send regular mail to America due to coronavirus. To expedite the mail, he took advantage of FedEx and it took only one week to reach America. At that time, I didn’t realize that our dialogue could be the last one.
I was very grateful for his writing words of congratulation on my new book. How could I know that his writing became something like his last will for me.
My elder brother has been a great figure to me like my father. When Korean war broke out in Korea in 1950, my father died of heart attack and I was thirteen years old. I was stricken with grief and had spent disturbed days ever since. The death of my father was a huge impact on me. I was emotionally unstable and sensitive. However, my brother always stood for me by my side and consoled and comforted me. Sometimes, he disciplined me to be mature and taught me about literature to realize my dream to be a writer such as poetess and essayist.
My brother was very knowledgeable about literature and histories. Politics, etc.
He was my mentor whom I followed in every direction like a disciple. His teaching molded my character and led me to be a poetess and essayist.
My brother had taught his students all his life as a professor of tenure at Korea University. He died during his presidency at the National Academy of Sciences, the Republic of Korea. This year he was very pleased to be re-elected president of the National Academy of Sciences. He called me from Korea to inform me of his re-presidency. I said to him, “Many congratulations!” through international calling. All of a sudden, he died of concussion. How could I utter my shock out of the blue! Sometime in the future when that time comes, I have hope to see him in heavens and comfort myself. I went back to the past which I had some wonderful time with him.
Since I came to the United States of America, I could have seen his disciples in America. Of one accord, they told me that my brother’s lectures were so amazing that they couldn’t forget his lectures. They told me that my brother was renowned with his knowledgeable and eloquent lectures. I have never listened to his lectures in person in class. Curiosity arouse to me and I was determined to listen to his lectures. I told my sister and my friend, Park, Young Sook, about that. They all agreed with me. We made a decision to go to Korea together. As soon as we arrived in Korea, we met our brother with my friend. We begged him that we were eager to listen to his lectures and allow us to do it. Surely, he accepted our offer.
After More than half a century had passed by, we could have visited Korea University. We were so excited and even thrilled to see new buildings all over the place. Especially the International Graduate School looked like hotel and attracted my attention. This graduate school was built for foreign students and foreign professors. The students in class were CEOs of their company and managing staffs.
Prior to lectures, he introduced a beautiful saying(quotes) by First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt to the students and he translated it into Korean. All of a sudden, the atmosphere of the class became emotionally relaxed free from tension of the subject of ‘Business Administration’. I really enjoyed her last quotes, “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift.”
The contents of lecture were about main subject for CEO. To make it short, it was a management strategy to become a rich and powerful nation.
We all were very happy to have listened to the wonderful lectures, even though we didn’t know anything about ‘Business Administration’, His lectures dealt with profound knowledge ranging over a wide variety of subjects and with versatile talents. On the way home, we applauded our brother for awesome lecture. We all were touched by his lecture. I was very proud of my brother. I remembered his nickname ‘A Walking encyclopedia’.
I miss him beyond my description and my memories about him are still vivid in my mind including his lecture. I am heartbroken by losing him like surging waves. I would like to introduce my brother’s poem which was awarded grand prize in competition in 1954 by Hwakwon literary magazine.
The Flag
Dong Ki Kim
Whenever I behold you,
I feel compelled to soar like blue smoke.
I long for your breathing and your world,
And at last I wish I were you.
You are another motherhood
Nurturing me.
Even though the flag is torn out by the wind
And worn out by the blizzard,
If I raise the flag up,
The flag raises me up to the sky as well.
