영화 한 장면
Swing Kids
Soo Yong Kim
There are many great TV shows and movies we all enjoy. There were many romance, classic movies and western movies I also enjoyed a lot a long time ago. I would like to tell you about one of my favorites.
I really enjoyed watching the Korean movie “Swing Kids” recently. The story takes place in the Geoje Prison Camp located on Geoje Island in the southernmost part of Korea during the Korean War in 1951. The newly appointed director of the camp, Robert, plans a project to form a dance group with prisoners of war to perform shows to make the camp external image bright. The warden orders Sergeant Jackson who was a former Broadway star to proceed with the project.
Several famous Korean actors and actresses appear in the film. Ro Ki- soo, a rebellious North Korean soldier, falls in love with tap dancing after meeting Jackson. Jackson’s task is to put together a dance company. Kang Byung-sam a Korean soldier and a born dancer, auditions for the company and Yang Pan-rae also joins the group.
All antagonists and protagonists live together in Geoje Prison Camp on Geoje Island. During the Korean War, many captured soldiers from North and South Korea, China as well as UN soldiers from all over the world, were interned at the camp.
There were ideological conflicts and intense strife among pro-communist soldiers and anti-communist soldiers. South Korean soldiers tried to convince the communist soldiers to abandon the communist ideology. However, the results were fruitless and in vain. Sergeant Jackson taught tap dance to the South Korean soldiers and it was a great success. They soon became skilled dancers, like their teacher, Jackson.
He held an audition in the camp and selected a Chinese soldier by the name of Xiaofang, a South Korean named Kang Byung-sam who was falsely accused of being a communist sympathizer, and a civilian named Yang Pan-rae. Sergeant Jackson also recognized the immense talent of Rho Ki-su for dance, and soon, “The Swing Kids” dance troupe was formed.
A North Korean Soldier saw their dancing and was fascinated. He became obsessed with it. He also started learning how to tap from Sergeant Jackson and the South Korean dancers. They became acquainted and eventually good friends unbeknownst to the communist authorities at the camp. If they had found out, he would have been killed for betraying the communists and befriending the prisoners.
At one point, the team members performed a surprise dance on the day of their visit from the Red Cross. It is very well received. The director of the camp suddenly announces the reporters that dance troupe would perform on Christmas Day. However, the atmosphere of riots among pro-communist prisoners reached its peak due to the praise given to North Korea by the newly arrived North Korean prisoner ‘Gwang-guk’. A conspiracy began to proceed among the North Korean prisoners. Ro Ki-su , a North Korean soldier, was blamed for his American style dancing with an American (Jackson) and south Korean dancers. The head of the North Korean soldiers, Sam-sik, orders Ro Ki-su to assassinate the Director(Robert) of the camp after performing on the stage of the Red Cross quarters on Christmas Eve.
The “Swing Kids” troupe performed their tap dance successfully on the stage and Ro Ki-su was left alone and danced by himself. After his dance was done, he went to back stage to take out a gun to assassinate the Director, but his brother Ro Ki-jin knocked him down and instead of Ro Ki-su, he shut the Director. But the injured director still survived. He shouted to his subjects to kill all Asian ‘Swing Kids’. They were all shot to death.
Fortunately, Robert survived in spite of injury. Actually South Korean dancers (anti-commnists) had nothing to do with assassination. They just danced. They were not guilty and innocent. However, the director thought that all members of dance troupe were involved in assassination. Only North Korean soldiers, Ro Kisu and Ro Kijin(pro-communists) were guilty of the attempt to assassinate the Director. The South Korean soldiers were sacrificed due to North Korean soldiers’ conspiracy. It was a tragedy. How cruel and brutal communists are! They have no emotion, sentiment, or sympathy. They acted like animals without a pang of conscience.
The movie touched my heart deeply and moved me to tears. My daughter and grandaughters were sobbing. Their eyes were bloodshot from crying. How blessed and happy we are to live in America! We were born free and stay free forever! However, we should keep in mind “Freedom is seldom free”.
